Helmet Vent Cover / General Purpose Scoop
Description
OK, I understand that this may only be of interest to a small number of people, but if it helps anyone at all it was worth posting. This was designed primarily to repair a motorcycle helmet. However, these little covers should be useful for virtually any similar application. And they should also work for modelers and R/C vehicle enthusiasts, scale model plane builders or even model rocket builders who need small scoops. These can easily be scaled up or down in your slicer to suit your needs. I have an Arai Quantum/e helmet that has been discontinued. Sadly my helmet's top-rear air vent cover just disappeared some time ago and there are no replacement parts available for it any longer (or not at an even remotely reasonable price anyway). Rather than leaving the vent hole uncovered, or taping over it, or buying a new helmet, I designed a replacement cover for it. There are three versions shown here- A short, a long, and a long with a scalloped edge. I liked the short version best personally, so that is what I attached to my helmet (see photos). It fits perfectly and works great. If the front scoop ever decides to become detached and lost, I will likely use the long scalloped edge version to replace it. Once printed, I trimmed the lower edges to fit the helmet contours snugly using sandpaper and an X-Acto knife. I then used a little silicone RTV along the edges and a larger dab underneath toward the small tip to adhere it to the helmet. I like RTV in this application because it adheres well and remains flexible. So (hopefully) it will not work its way loose again. However you could also use epoxy, cyanoacrylate glue, or almost any other adhesives. Thanks for looking, I hope this may be of some use for you.
