Helix Chess Set
Description
Helix Chess Set The Helix chess set is an original design set made up of spiral style back rank pieces and rotated solid style pawns. Solid pawns were selected as they make it a bit easier to distinguish pieces. This chess pieces have been designed to be easier to print on a 3D Printer with no supports. Each piece size and weight is detailed in the pictures above. The back rank pieces have a cutout for an M12 mutter (nut) to be inserted for weighting. The dimensions of the M12 are appx. 21x19x10 mm. The depth of each cutout is appx. 10.4 mm to accommodate the 10mm depth of the nut. The pawns pieces have a cutout for an M10 mutter (nut) to be inserted for weighting. The dimensions of the M10 are appx. 19x17x8 mm. The depth of each cutout is appx. 8.4 mm to accommodate the 8mm depth of the nut. Each chess piece is composed of a helix from the base to the crown of the piece. The chart pictured lists the appx. weights of each piece with the nut inserted and glued with a 3mm thick Felt (filz) base for easy movement. The pieces fit well with a Square Size of 45 to 55 mm Chess Piece Box The box has a slide top and is sized to accommodate this set. Details • Square Size 45 to 55 • Total Weight of Chess Pieces 730 gm • Weight of Box 319,30 gm • Box Dimensions 200x140x90 • Total Weight of Chess Pieces and Box 1049,30 gm • Chess Pieces 32 Printing Each piece can be printed standing straight up with no supports required. Due to the Helix shapes and the desire to minimize stringing, the pieces were printed using a .90 extrusion multiplier and lower than normal 2nd layer+ temperatures; 200 in most cases rather than the normal 210-215. Make sure your machine is well calibrated (leveled) for printing the box and you may want to run the bed a little on the hot side to prevent warping on the bottom and/or lid. Not a problem with a well-tuned MK3S+. The box was printed using • Filament PLA Prusament (Galaxy Black) • Infill 20% • Layer Height .30 The chess pieces were printed using • Black PLA Prusament (Galaxy Black) • White PLA Prusament (Vanilla White) • Infill 15 % • Layer Height .15 Quality • .90 extrusion multiplier • 200 2nd layer+ filament temperatures Weighting the Pieces and attaching felt • Insert the nut into the base of the piece • Apply some glue (model glue works well) to the base and nut • Put the glued surface lightly on the felt piece, don't press too hard • Allow to dry • Trim excess felt
