Solar Filter for Dwarf 2 Telescope

Solar Filter for Dwarf 2 Telescope

Description

**Solar Filter for Dwarf 2 Telescope**. 4 parts to print - main holder that will fit the Dwarf2, securing ring to hold solar film in place on the holder, and 2 caps to protect the delicate solar film from damage. Extras..

Polyester double sided tape (not foam tape).

Thousand Oaks Optical 4"x4" Solar Filter Sheet for Telescopes, Binoculars and Cameras. Amazon NZ$25.

6 off, 6mm dia, 3mm thick NZ Online Trademe store (50 pieces NZ$26).

Instructions:

Print the parts - I used ABS, 100% fill. My printer bed leveling is not that good so I print using a raft.

Insert magnets into the main holder. Cut out a piece of paper using the holder as a template. Place this paper on the Dwarf where the filter holder would be located (to prevent magnets scratching surface). Carefully locate the Dwarf2 magnets and their polarity by placing the 6mm magnets in locations indicated by the holes in the holder. Mark the top of the magnets with a plus or minus to help avoid mistakes - 4 of the magnets are polarized one way, 2 the opposite way. Again, carefully push the magnets into corresponding holes in the holder. If you get in a muddle, a wrongly placed magnet can be extracted by pushing a sharp object through the blanked off side of the corresponding hole (the plastic is under 1mm at that point - be careful to minimize damage there or the magnet will come in contact with the Dwarf2 plate surface). Test that the holder attaches to the Dwarf2.

Attach double side tape to cover the top surface of the holder rings. Trim the tape to form a neat ring of tape with no rough edges using a scalpel or small craft knife . A light sanding might help. Remove the top cover of the tape to expose the sticky surface. Repeat this process with the holding rings.

Cut a strip off the solar film (I think you will end up with enough for another two sets for use if these ones get damaged) and cut that to provide 2 squares to fit the holder rings.

Place the squares on the holder rings, avoiding wrinkling as much as possible (needs a steady hand).

Align the holding rings as best you can and press those down to secure the film. Trim the surplus film from the outside edges.

You might need to add a pit of padding to the protection caps , depending on your printer etc. Done. Sounds a lot of work… but I hope it helps someone who already has a 3d-printer and likes the challenge. **-Bob**
