Foley-Belsaw 200 key machine spacing micrometer adapter

Foley-Belsaw 200 key machine spacing micrometer adapter

Description

This is a mount to allow a spacing (X axis) micrometer to be added to a Foley 200 key cutting machine. There are two versions: The "MW" one is made to take an old Moore & Wright 965 micrometer (commonly available on ebay) with the "bow" cut off to leave a short stub, which fits within the large slot. It also needs the locking ring removing; that pulls out once the spindle is unscrewed far enough. The machine photos show that version with such a modified micrometer installed. The sizing is such that the micrometer should be a tight push-in or tap-in fit. If you need to force it at all, use a punch or drift against the stub of the bow only! If the mic has paint on it, that may need scraping off. The second version, "12mm" is similar but the micrometer mounting is for a spindle only style that has a 12mm clamp area. These are readily available on such as Aliexpress, with either 25, or 50mm range, and also in both sizes with digital readouts, inches or mm scaling. That type has not been tested so far as I've not got the 12mm type spindle yet. The micrometer fixing on that has provision for a 5mm pinch bolt with a recessed nut in the back. For either type I'd suggest adding some superglue once you positioning and working range have been verified, to avoid anything drifting. For both types, the mounting to the machine is done by sliding out the front bar to the left, after loosening the grub screws that lock it in position. As printed it the adapter should be a reasonable fit on that bar; if it is too tight to fit or adjust, clean the large hole with a round file or sandpaper, or put a 5/8" cutter through it. (I used a 5/8" Forstner bit, backwards - thread the shank through & grip that in a drill chuck, then using low speed pull it slowly through the hole. That avoids it trying to "run off" rather than start in the hole). Use either a long 5mm screw or a 5mm grubscrew, and a 5mm nut in the lower recess at the rear to allow the adapter to be locked in place. Initially, thread the screw just below flush with the nut surface. Push the machine slide bar through the adapter and re-centre the bar in the machine frame, then lock that with its grub screws. The adapter then needs adjusting side to side so when the the micrometer pin is fully to the right (eg. at the 1.000" position on the scale, for the M&W 1" type), the machine slide is exactly in position with the blade tip at the key shoulder zero position. Finally, tighten the adapter lower screw to clamp it at that point. (The M&W micrometer inner sleeve can be rotated and moved slightly if needed so the scale is in the best viewing position; it's a tight friction on the body, Do that before setting the adapter position, if needed).
