Vertex K8400-PHAETUS DRAGONFLY
Description
For Vertex K8400 some simple upgrades will make this printer very actual, fast, silent and precise. I was looking what was wrong with this printer since i rediscovered after so many years and tried pin point its main problems whitout breaking the bank or spending years since this project is more like a personal challenge. Its pity that this printer was a great opportunity but never find its real potential. The problem its that it was meant for ABS print but the hotend have melting parts, no heated bed, and bad airflow...so it was doomed...no taht good for pla and bad for abs... This updates make it very good for pla/pet-g (didn't try it for abs yet): First of all the bushings must slide effortless tested with hand an disconnected motors! -The most important upgrade is the PHAETUS DRAGONFLY HOTEND BMO, i find that can be easily screwed enlarging an existing hole on the existed plate. It will be ok with the bed and will be ok with the further heated bed which i will later post. The cooling must be modified as attached. -TCM2209 is the must have upgrade for x.y.z motors, i use 1.75A for x.y, and max for y. This require re flashing firmware with HALF (1/2) STEPS values!!! (the values are too big to modify from the front panel). You must use the initial version flashing Merlin from Vertex K8400 web usermanual. Also an extra ventilation on this chips radiators is needed and recalibrate e steps taking measurements with two digits caliper...etc... But the difference is night/day in terms of noise and precission, virtually making the printer similar to Prusa 3 behavior. This is why is recommended to use Repetier with Prusaslicer(importing profiles)and (important!) modify the ACCELERATION under 600 m/s since the k8400 have huge accelerations and proof to be far too aggressive for the build. Don't use the new drivers whitout understanding the above, it will ruin your printer if there in not implemented accordingly. The tcm2209 don't need any jumper modification and work up to 2A, stealthChop2 which have enough power not to jump layers like others in the past. During setup which you need to do with the help of front panel, you will heard strange noises until the new driver learns. So the ancient 8 bit actual board with Repetier/Prusa Slicer will make from K8400 a even better printer than top bed-slingers with minimal investment... i didn't push it too much but of course you cannot expect to beat a corexy....but the quality needs stability and time even for those... Cae isolation of joints with silicone(used for glass joints...etc..) would also help if the reducing noise and vibration is a goal... It is recommended that the hotend cooling small fan to extract air from radiator and be permanent powered full speed directly from source since connector wires prove to heat the board and even melt the plastic connector. This upgrade is not for beginners, please be careful , Good luck and work cautiously !
