The Futility Engine (no glue, no purpose, mostly philosophical)

The Futility Engine (no glue, no purpose, mostly philosophical)

Description

Maybe you're bored. Maybe you're exhausted. Maybe you've finished a months-long mechanical design project involving chainsaws and have no plan of what to do next. Maybe you're just sitting at your desk, and you want to do nothing while feeling like you're doing something. The Futility Engine is not the answer to any of your problems, but it might feel like it is. When fully assembled, turning the crank of The Futility Engine makes the gears move. Things happen, and you can see them happen. But some of the gears move faster than others. The effort and time required to move the gears increases from one stage of the Engine to the next. A dreadful sense of emptiness arises as you see some gears remain almost motionless. Are you really doing anything at all? Does turning the crank have any meaning? How many times do you have to turn this crank to make the last gear turn just once? The answer is nine million one hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred seventy times. A futile task… But maybe you'll feel like you're doing something meaningful along the way.
