Mold for a carbon fiber IOM sailboat rudder - the IKUBI
Description
This is a set of molds and cutting patterns to make your own molded carbon fiber rudder for an IOM or other one-meter R/C sailboat. I am calling this rudder Ikubi, named after a style of tip for a Japanese sword. The word "ikubi" comes from a specific shape and proportion and it means "the neck of a wild boar". It is so named because this style of sword tip is short and stout, rather than long and narrow. The tip shape of the rudder echoes the hisorical sword style, called "Ikubi-kissaki" that inspired it. These swords were made around 1250 considered some of the finest crafted at the time. I hope your rudder parts water as as sharply as the sword! ----------------------- This is the newest version of my rudder mold. It uses a different lay up technique than my previous version. It is completely redesigned and updated from the original- https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5451173 There is a mold half file to use and modify for any format printing as you like. There is a second mold half that includes a breakaway bracing that is designed to keep the tall model stable as it prints. I recommend using it. There is only one half provided. Flip the model in your slicer for the other half. There is a large cut pattern for the outer skin and small cut pattern for the inner reinforcement. All of the instructions for use are in my build thread on RCgroups.com. * It is an involved build, not something you are going to do in an hour. The instructions are detailed and long, be prepared! You can see the entire development of this project and everything you need to make your own. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4164819-How-to-make-sailboat-rudders-and-keels-in-6999-easy-steps The result is pretty decent rudder that you can go racing with and further customize to get the weight and strength you need. *A PDF of generalized instructions is included, but you must go visit the build thread to get the full details and photos.
