XB-38 nacelle mod for 1/72 B-17 kit

XB-38 nacelle mod for 1/72 B-17 kit

Description

During WWII there was concern that a shortage of Wright R1820 radial engines would lead to slower production of vital B-17s. Thus it was decided to experiment with the feasibility of equipping the Flying Fortress with 12 cylinder Allison in-line engines. A single example was built, tested very well and subsequently lost in an in-flight fire. Radial engine production was increased eliminating the concern of a shortage and the project was abandoned. The single modified aircraft, designated XB-38, was perhaps the best looking version of the B-17 ever but sadly there are no model kits of it. The few remaining resin mod kits that were made in 1/48 scale are extremely hard to find and very expensive so I decided to make my own by modifying a P-38 nacelle (the original donor aircraft) to fit my 1/72 Revell kit. The project is still in work but I will provide updates as I go. Enjoy.
