Hand-crank Powered Ring Sander

Hand-crank Powered Ring Sander

Description

Special thanks to Matthew S, over at Printables for his expanding ring mandrel model!: https://www.printables.com/en/model/632466-ring-mandrel/remixes This device was created to make sanding and polishing your rings simple, quiet, and safe. I personally live in an apartment, so using my rotary tool is not always an option, especially if you're a night owl. I also want this device to help young ring crafters have an easier, safer, and cheaper way to make their own rings. Although a 1:2 gear ratio is enough for me, feel free to remix this and add more gears for whatever gear ratio you want! WHAT YOU'LL NEED: 4 M5x30 bolts 2 M5x10 bolts 3 M5 nuts 2 8x22x7 ball bearings ~8 2mm washers (for proper spacing-- you can use what you have and tweak as needed) Your favorite clamp for securing it to your workbench :) INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY: 1) After printing out the parts, insert the bearings into their spaces. If they feel loose, hot glue can be used to secure it. 2) Screw the Bearing Doors in place with your M5x10 bolts. 3) Put the bearing inserts in. 4) TOP BEARING ASSEMBLY: On the front side (refer to images), place your first M5x30 through the top bearing. Add a washer, then a nut to secure the bolt. Next, you can place one more washer, and then screw on your Large Gear. The gear should be snug enough to the bolt to force-thread it. Sand or tape to adjust the snugness. Next place another washer, and then put a nut into the Handle Base and screw it onto the bolt. The bolt should be just long enough to provide a secure hold without extending out of the hole. Finally, using a single M5x30 (though a shorter one will suffice-- use whatever works), you can secure the Handle piece to the Handle Base. It should spin freely on this bolt, allowing easy cranking. You can put the Handle Cap into place now. (Feel free to remove it from your plate if you don't want it) 5) BOTTOM BEARING ASSEMBLY: Begin by adding to the third M5x30 (in this order): A washer, the Small Gear, another washer, a nut, and one more washer. Now place the bolt through the bottom gear, from the handle side. On the other side of the bearing, add one more washer, and then screw on the Expanding Ring Mandrel. Again, the hole in the mandrel should be the perfect size to tightly thread onto the bolt. 6) The ring mandrel only needs one M5x30 through the center, along with the wedge that expands it. Loosening and tightening it will expand and contract the mandrel, securing your ring in place. You're done! Take time to ensure the security and straightness of your bolts and gears, and make adjustments as needed.
