Kenner Vintage R2-D2 Artoo Deetoo Star Wars Figure
Description
Having just made a replacement R2 head for my broken vintage x-wing, I really wanted to print out a whole droid. After all, Kenner never gave us any different droids than the R2-D2 and R4 figures and I wanted to expand my collection. I found scans of droid figures from McFlunky and others for sale, but they didn't look very crisp in detail, or didn't fit the Kenner theme, and I certainly didn't want to pay for it. Then I came across falcon_gt4 (https://www.thingiverse.com/falken_gt4/designs) design and printed it. See this for the Astrometric droid body: (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3466148) and it looked great, but was still missing a few details as well as being about 2mm shorter than an actual figure. The arms fit into the body on a 2mm bearing which broke as soon as I looked at them. So, I started from scratch and modeled this one after an actual Kenner figure. I had to increase the size of the arm bearing to 4mm from 2mm in diameter, simplified the retaining ring (so it doesn't "click" - sorry) and created the details around the arms and tapered the body like the original. You'll need to glue the post into the bottom of the head and then find a screw and washer to screw it into the body from the bottom - just like the original! I recommend pre-threading the post by screwing and unscrewing repeatedly, or just printing it in PLA instead of resin so that it doesn't crack when screwing it in. I modeled this for resin printing, as it's really too small for FDM, but anything is possible these days.
