Thoracostomy Simulator (Chest tube)
Description
This is a chest wall model for practicing chest tube placement. The ribs have a groove for a silicone intercostal muscle. The silicone I used was a 30A hardness. The mold for the intercostal is a two part mold, right and left, which can be clamped together. the Base will hold 6-7 ribs. Along the top edge of the base is a tactile reference point which is intended to represent the nipple, or approximate the 4th intercostal space. (Chest tubes should generally be tunneled 1-2 interspaces and enter the chest at the 5th intercostal space or higher.). The overlying fascia and internal pleura can be represented using wide blue painters tape if desired. The skin is represented by silicone tattoo skins and affixed using clips that slide into a channel at the base and rubber bands and binder clips in the rear. The skin clips fit tightly and may need to be reduced, <5%, to slide easily in the channel. All were printed using standard settings in PLA without support. Medium binder clips are used with wedge inserts, 2 per, to hold the skin posteriorly.
