Soldering Iron Stand

Soldering Iron Stand

Description

I have a cheap Chicago Electric soldering iron I got from Harbor Freight. Its design flaw is that the center of gravity is too close to the cord end, so if it falls of the cheap little stand they give you, it will usually land with the heating element toughing your work surface. If you're using the tool body to rest the tool, which appears to have been designed for this purpose, forget about it. That sucker's gonna burn something, Murphy even has a law about it. I wanted something more foolproof so I made a cone that goes around the heating element without touching it and glues to the inside lip of the plastic body. It puts the center of gravity close enough to the business end that it doesn't tip over. It doesn't obstruct my view, YMMV. I've improved the design since I took the picture, the round shape doesn't prevent the soldering iron from rolling, the improved design does. I've included both designs, the old and the improved. It doesn't need supports, print settings don't matter a great deal.
