Atari 5200 Trak-Ball Retaining Ring
Description
I finally got a Trak-Ball for my recently purchased 5200 (I know, 40 years too late!) and there's an inherent problem with the design. When you spin the ball to the left, the ball jumps up and shudders as it lifts up off the bearing underneath. It could be that the hole for the Trak-Ball is too large and the ball isn't heavy enough. And, there seems to be a lot of space between the ball and the cutout (see pics). So, I designed this retaining ring to make up that 2-3mm space. It snaps into place and does a much better job of keeping the ball in place while still allowing the ball to spin freely. Just press it in from the top until it snaps in place - no disassembly of the case is necessary. It will pry up with a fingernail if you ever want to remove it. It does spin radially, but a small dab of sticky tape or hot glue underneath would hold it in place. I didn't use any glue because it does not deter from gameplay.
