The Lord of the Rings - Light-up The One Ring
Description
Model created from scratch, the text was from https://www.fontspace.com/the-one-ring-font-f3941 model isn't really scaleable given its sized to match electronics. I used Anycubic water washable clear resin. I tried various substances to fill in the area and ended up using a black polymer clay that requires baking at 250F to harden. It seems that heating it up or cooling down too quickly may cause the resin to crack (though not totally certain, just anecdotal). I used 0603 red LEDs, eleven in series with an inductor/capacitor, to provide the lighting. I used a wireless LED lighting kit bought off amazon and desoldered the inductor/capacitor to use. I was surprised there was no issues lighting up the 11 leds (a bit less than 20V), buts its a small current and inductors can create quite a voltage. I might try to find a flatter inductor to make the bump out smaller on the ring, but that's for next time... Figuring out the best lighting took a while, lighting from the back side results in small points of light and is not uniform at all. I built some models with light diffusers internally, but settled on lighting from the top and using a white polymer clay on the back side, and some internally on the bottom (the lower slits in the model) to defuse the light to be more uniform. I have recesses in the model for each LED and the capacitor and a small channel for the wiring and a giant hole for the inductor. The electronics were all covered in black clay to try to reduce escaping light. All of electronics are added before baking the polymer clay. Everything was sanded up to 600 grit sand paper. The text was masked off and everything spray painted with a black Rustoleum, which I found to be block light fairly well. Other paint leaked too much light. Then everything was painted with an acrylic black, with intention of leaking light through were the text is, seemed to work well. If you look really closely with the right external lighting, the text is visible with ring lights off, but seems fine. Then finally a clear coat on top of everything.
