Atanasoff–Berry computer
Description
Atanasoff–Berry Computer (Gorn included for Scale) --- The [ABC](http://ds-wordpress.haverford.edu/bitbybit/bit-by-bit-contents/chapter-four/4-6-the-atanasoff-berry-computer/#pg116) is recognized as the first computing device to calculate using electrons (via vacuum tubes)... Technically, the prototype device he demonstrated was first, but you know what I mean. The work of Konrad Zuse took place around the same time, but hist devices were electro-mechanical, using relays to do calculations. In comparing their contribution to computer history, Zuse's machines were more general purpose and flexible, and Atanasoff's machine was really only built for a single purpose. The ABC also used possibly the first example of dynamic RAM using capacitors to store data. My model is based on the working replica built in the 1990s. Most photos I can find are of the era and all seem to show the same side perspective. Diagrams and photos of the original show a large transformer on the left rear portion of the machine. It's hard to make out what's in the replica, but it looks like more than one transformer to me. I've updated a few things since making the model. I changed the top by removing a rim that I thought I would need to keep it square. It really became more of a hassle than anything. I think I made the tolerances on the bottom pieces too tight, and loosened them in V2 of the pieces. I've included V1 since I haven't tested them, though. When I built the model, I constructed the 4-piece frame and glued the top to it immediately intending for that to keep the frame square. If I were to do it again, I would add the top over filling in the frame. The motor mount printed better than I thought it would, but it is still very delicate. I actually thought it looked pretty good with the supports created by the slicer, and thought about leaving them on.
