naval 24 pound gun
Description
The 24-pounder guns were mounted on siege wheeled carriages weighing 970 kg, which had one tripod (T-shaped carriage). A screw mechanism (under the plate) was used for vertical guidance, the range was from - 4 to + 11 degrees. For a gun that could penetrate ramparts with direct fire, this was quite sufficient. The weight of the gun in the firing position was 3.71 tons, and together with the limber - 4.25 tons (plus or minus 50 kg). During transportation, the tripod was raised to the limber and rigidly secured, and then the gun barrel was manually pulled back. It took several hours to go from the traveling state to the combat state. And towing the gun required at least 8 horses (10 off-road) The 24-pound cannon fired 11.7 kg cannonballs, which could be given a speed of up to 500 m/s, which allowed the cannonball to be thrown 2.8 km. But the aiming range of the gun was set at only 1000 meters, and a confident hit on the target was achieved at a distance of 700 meters. At the same time, at a distance of 500 meters, the cannonball could penetrate an earthen embankment about 3.5 m thick. In addition, there was a 15.2 kg canister shot for firing at a distance of up to 800 meters. Canister shot was rarely used, and there were no grenades in the ammunition kit at all.
