Thermal Insulation for IKEA Metallisk kettle
Description
I designed a two-part shell for the IKEA “Metallisk” kettle and then manufactured it from ASA [acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, a temperature- and UV-resistant thermoplastic]. The 3D-printed parts have a wall thickness of 3 mm to ensure both sufficient mechanical stability and adequate resistance to the high temperatures encountered when heating water. ASA was chosen for its higher heat distortion resistance compared to common PLA or ABS filaments, ensuring that the shell does not deform at the typical operating temperatures of a kettle (close to 100 °C). The two halves are designed to precisely match the kettle’s outer contours and lock together via defined contact points. Inside the 3D-printed shell, a 20 mm Armaflex insulation layer [an elastic, rubber-based insulating material] is fully bonded to maximize thermal insulation. This creates a completely self-contained unit that can be placed onto and removed from the Metallisk kettle in one piece. Thanks to this modular design, an effective heat barrier is provided while the kettle’s functionality (e.g., filling and pouring) remains fully intact at all times. In a comprehensive scientific investigation of this insulation solution, I found that energy savings of up to 46% could be achieved when reheating water.
